History
According to the Skanda Purana and the Kashi Khand, Lord Shiva created Kaal Bhairav from the nail of His finger to punish Lord Brahma for his arrogance.
Bhairav cut off Brahma’s fifth head, due to which he was burdened with the sin of Brahma-hatya.
Wandering for redemption, Bhairav finally reached Kashi. The moment Brahma’s skull fell here, the sin was destroyed.
From that moment, Lord Shiva appointed him as the Kotwal (Chief Protector) of Kashi. Since then, Kaal Bhairav has been the eternal guardian of the city’s boundaries.
Darshan (Visiting the Temple)
The main Kaal Bhairav Temple is located in Visheshwarganj (Bhaironath, Lahurabir Tola).
The deity is a black stone idol with a silver face, seated upon a dog, holding a trident.
- Morning Timings: 5:00 AM – 1:30 PM
- Evening Timings: 4:30 PM – 9:30 PM
- Aarti: 6:00 AM (Morning), 7:00 PM (Evening)
- Peak Days: Tuesday & Sunday
It is believed that after visiting Kashi Vishwanath Temple, devotees must also visit Kaal Bhairav for complete blessings.
Worship Method
Worship at the temple is simple yet deeply devotional:
- Take a bath and wear clean clothes
- Enter the temple with your right foot
- Offer mustard oil, black sesame seeds, flowers, and sweets
- On special occasions, traditional offerings such as country liquor are made (only by priests)
- Light incense & lamps
- Chant “Om Kaal Bhairavaya Namah”
- Tie the Bhairav Raksha Sutra
- Feed dogs, as they are considered the vehicle of Kaal Bhairav
Devotees are encouraged to visit Kaal Bhairav both at the beginning and end of their Kashi journey.
Significance
Shri Kaal Bhairav is the judge and protector of Kashi.
He destroys sins, removes fears, grants liberation, and guards the spiritual entry and exit of the city.
Highly revered in Tantra practices, he symbolizes strength, justice, and protection.

काशी के कोतवाल: श्री काल भैरव – इतिहास, दर्शन, पूजा विधि और महत्त्व

इतिहास
स्कंद पुराण और काशी खंड के अनुसार, ब्रह्मा के अहंकार को दंडित करने हेतु भगवान शिव ने अपने नाखून से काल भैरव की रचना की। भैरव ने ब्रह्मा का पांचवां सिर काट दिया, जिससे ब्रह्महत्या दोष लगा। शिव ने भैरव को काशी का कोतवाल नियुक्त किया, जहां ब्रह्मा का सिर गिरा और दोष नष्ट हुआ। तब से वे काशी की सीमाओं के संरक्षक हैं।
दर्शन स्थल
मुख्य मंदिर काल भैरव मंदिर, विश्वेश्वरगंज (भैरोंनाथ, लहुरी टोला) में स्थित है। यहां चांदी की मुख वाली काली पाषाण मूर्ति कुत्ते पर विराजमान हैं, हाथ में त्रिशूल लिए। मंदिर सुबह 5:00 बजे से दोपहर 1:30 बजे तक और शाम 4:30 बजे से रात 9:30 बजे तक खुला रहता है। मंगलवार और रविवार को विशेष भीड़ रहती है। आरती सुबह 6 बजे और शाम 7 बजे होती है। काशी विश्वनाथ दर्शन के बाद यहां आना अनिवार्य माना जाता है।
पूजा विधि
पूजा सरल लेकिन श्रद्धापूर्ण है।
स्नान कर स्वच्छ वस्त्र धारण करें।
दाहिने पैर से प्रवेश करें।
सरसों का तेल, काले तिल, फूल और मिठाई चढ़ाएं। विशेष अवसरों पर मदिरा (देशी शराब) अर्पित की परंपरा है, जिसे पुजारी चढ़ाते हैं।
धूप-दीप जलाएं और "ॐ काल भैरवाय नमः" मंत्र जपें।
काशी आने-जाने पर दर्शन करें। भैरव रक्षा सूत्र बांधें। कुत्तों को भोजन दान करें, जो उनका वाहन हैं।
महत्त्व
काल भैरव काशी के न्यायाधीश हैं। वे पाप नष्ट करते हैं, भय दूर भगाते हैं और मुक्ति प्रदान करते हैं। काशी में प्रवेश-निकास उनकी कृपा से होता है। तंत्र साधना में प्रमुख, वे रक्षा और शक्ति के प्रतीक हैं।
